Mr. Barun Chandra Das is young rickshaw pullers who came to Guwahati in the year 1997 at his 14 years of age. Because of his family poverty Barun compelled to reach Guwahati in search for a livelihood. Initially, he has started his works (with one of his fellow members from the same village) as a helper in a small restaurant in Rukmininagar. Latter on Barun clean the utensils of the restaurant in the morning and at night and that way he gets his breakfast and dinner. In the day time he has taken a traditional Rickshaw on daily rent of Rs. 10/-. He has continued this livelihood for last 12 years. He never owns a Rickshaw. He felt that a major part of his daily earning went to the owner of the rickshaw. He could hardly manage his daily need of his family. Although he is very much aware about the Dipbahan rickshaw (newly designed rickshaw) he is not confident enough to take the risk of loan. But every time he saw the Dipbahan he becomes crazy to own it. In January 2009 he has purchased one old Dipbahan Rickshaw at Rs. 1400/- and started pulling it. He becomes passionate for this Dipbahan rickshaw. He builds up his own confidence. He approached the office in search of an opportunity to enroll himself as one of the members to the Rickshaw Bank project.
He met the office bearers of the Rickshaw Bank project in Guwahati. Eventually, he submitted his application through the Field Collector in subsequent phases. A Dipbahan rickshaw was given to him on 11-05-2010 with a regulation of daily repayment of Rs. 30.00 per day. He was honest and regular in his works and got the ownership of the rickshaw on 08-07-2011. Presently, he has been earning atleast Rs. 300.00 per day that helps him to save an amount Rs. 150.00 per day and others for household expenses. He is one of the well-known members of the Rickshaw Bank project. Now Barun is one of the pioneers in his village. Last year he has taken 6 Bighas of land with mortgage for Rs. 30,000/- and given it to the fellow villagers to cultivate at a contract of 35 mound grain in a year. He has purchased 4 pigs at Rs. 22,000/- and given it to the nearby villagers on a piglet sharing basis. He has already earned Rs. 12,000/- and expecting Rs. 40,000/- by the end January, 2012. Again he has given 4 goats 12 ducks to two different families of his village on profit sharing basis. From the duck investment of Rs. 900/- he has already earned Rs. 3100/-. He has a life insurance Policy under LIC for Rs. 1.5 lakhs where he paid Rs. 2291/- quarterly premium. Recently, he has started to construct a brick walled, CGI roofing 4 room house in his native. He has a bank account with the Punjab National Bank, Borjal Branch with his account no.: 1386000100060258. As reported by him he has a bank balance of about Rs. 30,000/- as of today. According to him the villagers has two opinions on him; few said “he is involved with some unsocial activities and thereby he is able to earn quick money” and for others “Barun is an ideal person for the hard workers”. Although people are envied upon him for his success he said “the Dipbahan rickshaw is the only solutions for all.” Now he brings his relatives and helping them to take new rickshaws besides taking a new one by him.
